Anfang Sommer 2007 beauftragte mich John Miller, Professor für Blechblasinstrumente am Royal Northern College of Music von Manchester (England), ein Stück für Blechbläserensemble zu schreiben. Es handelte sich um ein gemeinsames Projekt des RNCM und drei anderen Institutionen: Konservatorium Birmingham, Royal Academy of Music und Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Ich entschloss mich für ein solistisches Werk für Bassposaune (ein vernachlässigtes Instrument mit grossem solistischem Potenzial), Blechbläserensemble und Schlagwerk. Meine vier Grosskinder haben mich zu den vier Sätzen inspiriert und so ist ihnen je ein Satz auch gewidmet. Also: - Monster Music für Kate, die so gerne Monster spielt, begleitet von Sousa Märschen. - Ghost [Gespenst] für Alex, ihr älterer Bruder, der überzeugt war, dass ein Gespenst ihren Garten in London bewohnte. - Mischief [Dummheit] für Rebecca, ihre jüngste und sehr mutige Schwester. - W.W.W. ist für Barnaby,der älteste Cousin. Nicht das Web, sondern ein Familienscherz, in welchem seine Grossmutter, meine Gattin, eine böse Hexe aus dem Westen [Wicked Witch of the West] ist. Die Uraufführung fand im Januar 2008 am Royal Northern College statt, mit Mark Frost als Solist, John Miller als Dirigent und einem aus den vier erwähnten Institutionen zusammengesetztes Ensemble. Elgar Howarth, May 2009, Beccles, Suffolk, England In the late Spring of 2007 I was asked by John Miller, Professor of Brass at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to write a piece for brass ensemble. It was to be a joint project with RNCM, the Birmingham Conservatoire, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I chose to write a piece for solo bass trombone (a much neglected solo instrument), brass ensemble and percussion. In four movements, it is inspired by and dedicated to my four grand-children, a movement for each. Like many youngsters they are intrigued by the idea of ghosts. Hence: - Monster Music for Kate who loves to play monsters to the accompaniment of Sousa marches. - Ghosts for Alex, her older brother, who was convinced there was a ghost in the garden of their London house. - Mischief for Rebecca, their younger and extremely feisty sister. - W.W.W. is for Barnaby their older cousin. Not the Web, but a family joke that his grandmother, my wife, is a Wicked Witch of the West. The first performance was given at the Royal Northern College by an ensemble composed of students from the four commissioning colleges, with Mark Frost as soloist and John Miller as conductor, in January 2008. Elgar Howarth, May 2009, Beccles, Suffolk, England A la fin du printemps 2007, John Miller, professeur d'instruments de cuivre du Royal Northern College of Music de Manchester (Angleterre) m'a demandé d'écrire une pièce pour ensemble de cuivres. Il s'agissait d'un projet commun conçu par le RNCM, le Conservatoire de Birmingham, la Royal Academy of Music, et le Royal Welsh Collecte of Music and Drama. J'ai choisi d'écrire une pièce pour trombone basse solo (un instrument au potentiel soliste négligé), ensemble de cuivres et percussion. Pas le Web, mais une plaisanterie familiale dans laquelle sa grand-mère, mon épouse, est une méchante sorcière de l'ouest (Wicked Witch of the West). La création mondiale a été réalisée au Royal Northern College en janvier 2008 par un ensemble composé d'étudiants issus des quatre collèges qui ont commandé l'oeuvre, avec Mark Frost comme soliste et John Miller comme chef.
