Ulteriori informazioni / contenuti	Richard Lane und ich begegneten uns 1957 während unserer Schulung in der U.S. Army. Und wir blieben Freunde bis zu seinem Tode im Jahre 2004. Oft habe ich ihn herausgefordert, neue Werke für Bratsche oder Viola d'Amore zu komponieren. Meinen Wünschen kam er grosszügig nach und hinterliess eine beachtliche Anzahl von Werken für diese Instrumente in verschiedenen Besetzungen. Während unserer Militärzeit schrieb Richard Lane eine kurze Canzona [1957] für Geige, Bratsche und Klavier [Editions Bim - MCX54], wahrscheinlich sein erstes Werk mit einer wichtigen Bratschen-Partie. Später, am Anfang meiner Karriere, in einem College der City University von New York engagiert, bat ich ihn um eine Sonate für Bratsche und Klavier. Es war die erste von drei Sonaten, die er für diese Besetzung schrieb. Sie wurde 1979 beendet, uraufgeführt habe ich sie 1981. Richard Lane's Musik ist eher konservativ, mit starkem romantischem Hauch und meist klassischen Formen. Nichtsdestotrotz, seine Musik ist zeitgenössisch, mit eigenartigem, sanftem Charakter. Diese Sonata No.1 besteht aus 3 Sätzen (schnell-langsam-schnell) und, wie oft seine Instrumentalmusik, ist auch innerhalb der einzelnen Sätze dreiteilig strukturiert. Diese charmante und lebhafte Sonate, voller Kontraste und Emotionen, zeigt wie leicht der Komponist diese zwei Instrumente zum Dialog bringen konnte. Ein Werk, das im Repertoire der Bratschisten sicherlich einen guten Platz einnehmen wird. Myron Rosenblum Richard Lane's Brief an Myron Rosenblum vom 14. Richard Lane and I met during basic training in the US Army in 1957. We remained fast friends over the years until his death and I frequently would ask him to write a new piece for viola or viola d'amore. He accommodated me in his most generous fashion and produced quite a few works for both these instruments in different settings. During our army time together, Richard Lane wrote a short Canzona [1957] for violin, viola and piano [Editions Bim - MCX54], possibly the first piece of his that included a prominent viola part. I later received an appointment at a college in the City University of New York and it was early in my career there that I asked Richard for a Sonata for viola and piano. Hence, came his first of three sonatas for this combination, completed in 1979 and first performed by this writer at my college in 1981. Richard Lane's music generally is conservative with strong romantic elements and with a propensity for classical forms. Yet, his music is contemporary with a singular character and sweetness. This Sonata No. 1 is in three movements (fast-slow-fast) and, as in much of Lane's instrumental music, follows three-part form in many of the individual movements. This charming and lively sonata, full of much contrast and emotion, reveals the composer's successful blending of viola and piano and should surely become a staple in the violist's repertory. Sincerely, Dick Col.[onel] of K[entuck]y Ma première rencontre avec Richard Lane eut lieu en 1957, durant notre école de recrue dans l'armée américaine. Nous sommes restés amis jusqu'à son décès en 2004 et je l'ai souvent incité à écrire de nouvelles oeuvres pour alto ou viola d'amore. Il m'a satisfait de façon particulièrement généreuse en écrivant un bon nombre de pièces pour ces deux instruments dans différentes formations. Durant notre service militaire, Richard Lane écrivit une brève Canzona [1957] pour violon, alto et piano [Editions Bim - MCX54], probablement la première de ses oeuvres comprenant une partie d'alto importante. Plus tard, en début de carrière et engagé dans un collège de la City University de New York, je lui ai demandé d'écrire une sonate pour alto et piano. Ce fut la première des trois qu'il écrivit pour cette formation. Achevée en 1979, je l'ai créée en 1981. La musique de Richard Lane est de tendance plutôt conservatrice, fortement teintée de romantisme et le plus souvent structurée selon les formes classiques. Néanmoins, sa musique est contemporaine, d'un caractère singulier, empreint de douceur. Cette Sonata No. 1 s'articule sur trois mouvements (rapide-lent-rapide) et, comme souvent dans sa musique instrumentale, suit également une forme tripartite dans nombre de ces mouvements. Cette sonate charmante et vive, riche en contrastes et en émotions, révèle l'aisance du compositeur à faire dialoguer ces deux instruments et s'inscrira certainement dans le répertoire des altistes.
