Ulteriori informazioni / contenuti	Richard Lane und ich wurden im Oktober 1956 zum US-Militärdienst eingezogen und haben uns im Januar 1957, während der zweiten Proben-Session der Militärmusik in Fort Dix, New Jersey, kennengelernt. Es entstand eine spontane Freundschaft und neben den üblichen Militäraufgaben, haben wir die Zeit gefunden, Kammermusik für Geige, Bratsche und Klavier mit anderen Musikrekruten zu pflegen. Einer davon war mein anderer alter Freund und ausgezeichneter Geiger Richard Berman. Bald komponierte Richard Lane diese Canzone für unsere Besetzung. Dieses Werk war das erste einer der Bratsche gewidmeten Reihe. Ich glaube, der besondere Klang und der TonUmfang dieses Instrumentes passten ganz besonders zu Richard Lane's Temperament. Diese Canzone stützt sich auf die historische, lyrische Ausdrucksart Italiens sowie auf die kontrapunktischen, imitativen Canzonen der Spätrenaissance, bleibt aber in harmonisch und taktartig zeitgenössichem Rahmen. Trotz der Kürze ist diese Canzone ein ganz charmantes Stück. Myron Rosenblum Sunnyside, New York, USA, August, 2006 Richard Lane and I were both drafted into the U.S. Army in October, 1956 and met during our second session of basic training at the Band School, Ft. Dix, New Jersey in January, 1957. We became immediate friends and, in addition to the usual army chores, we managed to find time to play chamber music for violin, viola and piano, along with some other draftees at the Band School. One of these was Richard Berman, an excellent violinist who happened also to be an old friend of mine. Richard Lane eventually composed the Canzone for the same combination of instruments. This short work was Richard's first work for viola. Many more works for and with viola would follow. I believe the more mellow sounds and alto range of the viola suited his temperament very well and he never ceased to write inspired music for that instrument. The Canzone looks back to the Italian genre of a work of lyrical expression, and also to the contrapuntal canzona of the late Renaissance with its imitative writing, but within the context of contemporary harmonies and meter changes. Despite its brevity, the Canzone is a charming work. Myron Rosenblum Sunnyside, New York, USA, August, 2006 J'ai commencé mon service militaire dans l'armée américaine en octobre 1956 en même temps que Richard Lane et j'ai fait sa connaissance en janvier 1957 durant la deuxième session d'entraînement de base de la Musique militaire à Fort Dix, dans le New Jersey. Une amitié spontanée s'établit entre nous et en dehors des corvées habituelles de l'armée, nous avons trouvé le temps de pratiquer la musique de chambre pour violon, alto et piano avec d'autres conscrits de la Musique. L'un d'entre eux était mon ami et excellent violoniste Richard Berman. Par la suite, Richard Lane composa cette Canzone spécialement pour notre formation. Cette oeuvre fut la première d'une belle série dédiée à cet instrument, en raison, je pense, de l'attirance du compositeur pour la sonorité particulière et la tessiture de cet instrument qui convenait particulièrement à son tempéramment. Cette Canzone se réfère au genre italien historique d'expression lyrique ainsi qu'à la Canzona contrapunctique de la Renaissance avec son écriture imitative, tout en restant dans le contexte harmonique et des changements métriques contemporains.
